Should Police Officers Train In Martial Arts?
Have you ever noticed how some police officers seem to be a little more round than they should be? Even though most are not sitting around eating doughnuts as they are typically portrayed, some are more obese than they should be. Police officers that are unable to chase down a fugitive if necessary, are setting a bad example for everyone and present a public safety hazard.. To become a police officer, one must past a fitness test or standard of some sort, but do these fitness regulations continue on? Apparently not.
Police officers need to be physically fit in order to perform at their job to the highest standard, so why not enforce that they engage in some sort of regular workout routine. A logical answer to this would be martial arts. By training in either Muay Thai or Brazilian jiu jitsu, officers would be getting a full body workout and the knowledge of how to execute chokes and joint locks which may be deemed useful in their field of work. Some of what officers would be learning may not be acceptable to be put to use against the public, but at least they would be working out regularly and therefore on the road to being a physically fit officer. Martial arts training requires one to use muscles all over the body, therefore strengthening the whole body.
Overweight officers can cost the public money and safety because if they are hurt on the job they need time off and the public pays the bills. It is irresponsible from a public safety standpoint to allow officers on the job that have a lacking physical condition.. By strengthening their whole body they can do a better job to keep the public safe because they are fit and ready for action. There would be less altercations that involve weapons because police officers would be more comfortable in hand to hand combat situations.. It would be much better for an officer to quickly put a suspect in a standing Americana then to stand with a gun pointed at their head or for them to actually have to fire their weapon. This could by why my Columbia MD Kickboxing school has so many officers enrolled. Some police officers at this point are too obese for their job, but training in some form of martial arts would do them and the general public a huge favor.
