He’s a patrol officer who maintains the status quo; their planet is certain to collapse while their child Ezia takes part in a revolt contrary to the control and curriculum of the local off-white-run school. Cast includes Morgan Freeman, Danny Glover, Malcolm McDowell, Alfie Woodard, Marius Weyers, Maynard Eziashi, Malick Bowens, and Grace Mahlaba. (PG-13, 120 minutes, 1993)

Hangmen Also Die!: Alright WW2 drama loosely based on truth and spotlighting the opposition by Czech natives to their Nazi occupiers and the plight of Donlevy once he murders Reinhard Heydrich, Nazi governor of Prague. Cast includes Brian Donlevy, Walter Brennan, Anna Lee, Gene Lockhart, Dennis O’Keefe, and Lionel Stander. (131 minutes, 1943)

U-571: It is 1942 and the German’s are dominating the battle of the Atlantic with their U-boats. In a desperate attempt to change the war, a vintage WWI submarine, the S-33 is given a dangerous and difficult assignment. Steal an Enigma machine, which codes all the German communications, in such a way that the Germans don’t even know that it has even been stolen.

Soul Food: The tradition of Sunday dinners with Mama Joe has kept the family together for going on 40 years. When she is hospitalized with diabetes, the Sunday dinners stop. Almost immediately the family falls into turmoil, with lots of infighting and problems. Finally Mama Joe’s grandson Ahmad sees what needs to be done, and Sunday dinners are revived.

The Sign of Zorro: Few shows of Disney’s Zorro Television show plastered together; awkward continuity sabotages what charm the succession had to offer. Cast includes Lewis R. Foster. Man Williams, Henry Calvin, Gene Sheldon, Britt Lomond, George J. Lewis, and Lisa Gaye. (91 minutes, 1960)

King of Jazz: Million dollar lyrical revue, shot in 2-color Technicolor format, is filled with bigger-than-life production numbers and remarkable melodies. Highlights contain Walter Lantz’s animation pattern, Joe Venuti’s swing violin, youthful Bing Crosby with the Tempo Boys, and, obviously, Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” which in early Technicolor is more a rhapsody in turquoise. Cast includes Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, John Boles, Jeanette Loff, The Tempo Boys Bing Crosby, Al Rinker, and Harry Barris. (93 minutes, 1930)
