There is nothing worse than going to a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition and you are scheduled to fight at an inconvenient time. Maryland jujitsu instructors tell their students it doesn’t matter if you are happy that you get to fight first, middle, or last. They both share a common factor you may have to wait around for a while depending on when you are scheduled to fight. The way your time will be spent at a tournament is decided by whether or not you choose to go with the team, family, friends, or by yourself. If you are a close knit team then time will go by super quickly.

If you are not a closed knit family type of team you can try these simple ideas to help pass the time till it’s your turn to fight. For some people all that time in between can be a determent to them. New competitors have the tendency to get wrapped up in watching other competitors fight and that can affect their nerves negatively. Competitors who lose their focus quickly will have difficulty executing their game plan. If you are a competitor that has to watch your weight then going last is not the ideal position to be in. Having to wait to fight is not good for BJJ competitors who are close on the weight for international tournaments. There is a chance that you can gain weight at the venue if you eat. MMA in MD students use this strategy when you are close to your weight limit you can eat as long as you go to weight scale carrying your food and seeing how you weight with gi and food in your hand. If it is over the limit then you can’t eat it.

There is a perk to getting to fight earlier. After your fight you can do whatever you want to do for the rest of the day. You can eat whatever you want to eat. However it’s good for team if wait till all of your teammates compete before leaving. To pass the time quickly you can always go the more traditional route and listen to music. You can watch the fights and learn a lot from them. You can visit the vendor shops at the venue of the competition. Students that get MMA training in MD train at various hours throughout the day so their body will have energy to fight no matter what time.
